Paul J. Wexler Honorary Scholarship

Meet Paul

Paul Wexler has championed the interests of individuals with disabilities for over 50 years, inspired by his younger brother Bert, who was born with Down syndrome, and supported by his wife Hilary, who actively advocated by his side. Therefore, upon his retirement on June 2, 2019, the Board of Directors is pleased to establish the Paul J. Wexler Scholarship in recognition of Paul’s lifetime of service to individuals with disabilities and their families. The Paul J. Wexler Honorary Scholarship recognizes Paul’s outstanding commitment, lifelong dedication and tireless advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

Paul began his career as a mental health technician at St. Vincent’s in New York City and then attained his Master of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973. From 1973 to 1985, Paul held a variety of jobs supporting people with disabilities, including a stint as a Social Worker at the Northern Virginia Training Center. In 1986, he became the Executive Director of Central Fairfax Services.

Paul chose June 2 as a meaningful day for his retirement. His brother Bert was born on this day in 1957 and on the same day in 2018, his brother Bert passed away. It was also the day that Paul began his leadership career as Executive Director at Central Fairfax Services.

During Paul’s career, he expanded the services and more than doubled the capacity of Central Fairfax Services to serve individuals with the most significant support needs in northern Virginia. He led the Central Fairfax Services affiliation with ServiceSource in 2010. The affiliation provided economic stability and expanded the scope and quality of services available to individuals with significant and complex needs. After the affiliation, Paul continued to advocate and lead the efforts to establish the Family Support Services and Senior Service Programs, which significantly expand the depth and breadth of community services available to individuals with disabilities and their families.

Those who know Paul, understand that his advocacy and legacy will extend beyond his retirement date.
