Vocational Skills Training

A competency-based and highly individualized program that assists individuals in gaining the skills necessary for entry-level jobs in their chosen area of work. Participants learn skills in a real work setting and participate in job readiness classes where they learn job searching skills. We offer job training in the following specific areas:

Business Technology Training

A self-paced training program that provides participants with the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level clerical or administrative assistant position. Heavy emphasis is placed on computer skills. Other skills taught include: filing and records management, keyboarding, office etiquette, telephone skills and ten-key calculator. Core training areas include general clerical, medical office, data entry, customer service, call center, clerical support, and financial record keeping. These services are funded primarily through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. For more information contact: Wilmington CSB: biztechwilmington@servicesource.org

On-the-Job Training (OJT)

Walgreens

SSDE’s Retail Skills Training program is open-entry/open-exit so the program can begin at any time, with the caveat that at least two, maximum 3 participants are required to conduct a REDI Retail Training session. The program runs for four weeks at one of SSDE’s partnering Walgreens stores inclusive of Naaman’s Road, Pennsylvania Ave, and Concord Pike stores in Wilmington; University Plaza Store in Newark, and Walgreens in Smyrna, Dover, Harrington & other sites that express interest in hosting the training. Participants are referred to the program and sponsored by the Delaware Division of Vocation Rehabilitation (DVR)

The hours for training are 9:00 am to 2:00 pm however, flexibility of hours may be required based on host site’s needs (20 hours per week) generally 4 days a week Monday to Thursday. Participants receive 80 hours of occupational skills training combined with classroom training (soft skills and retail/customer service topics), and are paid, at the Delaware State minimum wage, for 80 hours of on the job training working side by side with Walgreens personnel (with support from SSDE’s Employment Consultant) & classroom instruction.

100% of this training program occurs within Walgreens stores, and as noted, all training materials are developed by Walgreens, immersing participants within a contextualized work-learning environment. All participants are paid during the training. SSDE has found that participants who are not offered a job at Walgreens following REDI training, are able to easily transfer the skills they learn in similar retail establishments. In addition, other retailers are eager to recruit participants who have completed REDI training. For more information contact Suzanne Cash at 302 765-1222
