ServiceSource Honored with Environmental Excellence Award

Fairfax, Va.
— ServiceSource was awarded the Fairfax County Environmental Excellence award for their Keep It Green program. Keep It Green repairs computers for reuse and disassembles other electronics for proper recycling.

“We are grateful to be recognized by Fairfax County for our efforts to keep the county green,” said Janet Samuelson, ServiceSource president and CEO. “Our work with Fairfax County is a unique public-private partnership that makes our community a better place to live while also providing employment to local residents with disabilities.”

Since 2002, ServiceSource has partnered with Fairfax County to collect unwanted electronics from residents to recycle and refurbish them. To date, the program has processed more than 5 million pounds of electronic waste, allowing approximately 60 tons of lead to be diverted from county waste facilities. Additionally, scrap metals are sent to reputable U.S. dealers and thus, not exported to countries where environmental standards may be less stringent.

Electronics that can be repaired undergo a three-step data destruction process to ensure the removal of all data and then ServiceSource employees reconfigure them to be fully-functional. Refurbished desktop computers are then sold at the ServiceSource thrift shop or sold to Fairfax County public school students for a nominal fee of $100 with the proceeds going to support programs for people with disabilities.
