extended guidance and employment for adults with autism
Although it has been in existence for less than a year, the ServiceSource Delaware Regional Office's employment program, designed specifically for people with Asperger's Syndrome or those on the Autism Spectrum, has already had a tremendous impact on the lives of the individuals served. Established in March 2011, the program is currently serving 13 individuals. Since inception, there have been five individuals successfully placed in community employment, two individuals matched with volunteer opportunities, one attending college, two seeking volunteer work and two currently seeking employment.
Currently supported by the OCI Foundation and a grant from Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, Extended Guidance & Employment for Adults with Autism specializes in employment for adults with Aspergers and other spectrum related disorders. The comprehensive services have been designed with input from Delaware's Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and Delaware Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDDS).
The primary focus of the program is to help prepare individuals for employment, locate jobs and maintain jobs in their community. Services include career counseling, career exploration, resume development and interview skills, social skills assistance, job placement, coaching and job retention. One of the most important aspects of the program is on-going support designed to help participants maintain employment and/or make important career decisions.
In 2012, thanks to the grant from AstraZeneca, iPads will be incorporated into the program for both communication and organizational purposes. A mentoring program has also been developed and will officially start in early March. The mentoring program pairs a local business professional with an adult with Aspergers. Through career guidance and other activities of their choice, participants practice demonstrated social skills in natural environments. In addition, utilizing an established curriculum, each participant will work on additional job seeking skills at regularly scheduled Job Club meetings. ServiceSource Delaware is currently actively recruiting volunteers who want to be a mentor.
Through the years, the ServiceSource Delaware Regional Office has implemented multiple innovative programs resulting in the successful employment of thousands of people with disabilities. After a very impactful 2011, the program is looking forward to an equally successful 2012.
